The chief executive of American Eagle Outfitters has been named the recipient of one of the US retail industry's highest honours, recognising more than three decades of leadership at the apparel retailer.

Jay Schottenstein will receive the Visionary 2027 award from the National Retail Federation (NRF) during the NRF Foundation Honors in New York on 10 January 2027. The annual award recognises retail leaders who have made a lasting impact on the industry through business growth, innovation and leadership.

Schottenstein has led American Eagle Outfitters since 1992, overseeing the expansion of the company into a global retailer operating the American Eagle and Aerie brands.

The business now generates annual revenue of more than $5bn and serves customers through stores and digital channels across multiple international markets.

Recognition for long-term leadership

The NRF said Schottenstein was selected for helping transform American Eagle Outfitters into one of the world's largest specialty apparel retailers while maintaining a long-term focus on customers, employees and brand development.

NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay described Schottenstein as "one of retail's most respected leaders", adding that his "vision, values and relentless focus on people have shaped not only the success of American Eagle Outfitters, but also the future of the retail industry."

Responding to the announcement, Schottenstein said the recognition reflected the work of the company's employees rather than one individual.

"This honour belongs to our entire team," he said.

He added that the retailer's achievements had been built through "their passion, resilience and commitment to serving our customers every day."

A retailer with global reach

Founded in 1977, American Eagle Outfitters has grown into a global fashion retailer, with the American Eagle brand focusing on casual apparel and denim, while Aerie has become a major player in the intimates and activewear market.

The company has invested heavily in digital commerce, omnichannel retail and supply chain capabilities in recent years as consumer shopping habits have shifted towards online and mobile channels.

Those investments have helped the retailer strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive global apparel market.

For retail executives, the recognition comes at a time when the sector continues to face changing consumer demand, higher operating costs and rapid technology adoption. Industry leaders are increasingly balancing investment in digital transformation with improving operational efficiency and customer experience.

Award to be presented in New York

The Visionary award will be presented during the NRF Foundation Honors on 10 January, ahead of NRF 2027: Retail's Big Show, one of the world's largest retail industry events.

Previous recipients include Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Fran Horowitz, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, Target chairman and CEO Brian Cornell, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, Lowe's chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison, Nike's former executive chairman Mark Parker and former Levi Strauss & Co CEO Chip Bergh.

Schottenstein will also take part in a fireside chat with Shay during NRF 2027, where he is expected to discuss his leadership journey and the changing direction of the global retail industry.
