Situated in Bangkok, Thailand, Central Westville is a semi-outdoor shopping centre developed by Thailand’s retail property developer Central Pattana.

The development of Central Westville was first announced in 2022 and was opened in November 2023. The mall was developed with an estimated investment of Bt6.2bn ($171.56m).

Central Westville holds the distinction of being the inaugural low-carbon mall initiative by Central Group, the parent entity of Central Pattana.

Location

Central Westville was developed to redefine the Ratchaphruek area of Bangkok as a new hub for high-end lifestyles in the western part of the city.

The mall caters to a population of more than 400,000 by offering a new retail concept and green spaces.

Central Westville shopping centre details

The three-storey Central Westville shopping mall has a gross floor area (GFA) of 93,000m² (approximately one million ft² ) and a leasable space of 32,000m².

The mall seeks to cater to four lifestyle trends: family-oriented visitors; health enthusiasts and active individuals; the pet owners or “petsumer” community, and those interested in eco-consciousness and sustainability.

The mall is distinguished by its expansive green spaces which are designed to accommodate a variety of activities. They include family-oriented and pet-friendly zones, as well as areas dedicated to sports.

Central Westville design details

Central Westville’s design integrates green space to create a park-like atmosphere within the city, incorporating natural elements both inside and outside. The facade utilises natural winds and lighting, enhancing the eco-friendly ethos.

The semi-outdoor sections mirror natural landscapes, while the indoor spaces emulate built environments, or “homes”, using familiar materials and designs that are expanded throughout the area.

Local materials such as fired clay tiles, glass blocks, and coloured-coated tiles were used in the construction. A distinctive motif, inspired by a crossing herringbone weaving pattern, is a defining feature of the design, applied on various surfaces and creating a unique visual identity.

Retail and dining offerings

Central Westville offers a range of products and services, including fashion, entertainment, dining and a selection of both Thai and international brands. The mall houses 300 retail stores and more than 100 dining establishments.

Notable retail tenants include Puma, Crocs, Birkenstock, Vans and Pandora.

Entertainment options include Skyrise Adventures, Westville Cineplex and the children’s edutainment park, Kiztopia.

Dining choices are varied, with Tops Food Hall, KFC, Shiko Udon bar, Auntie Anne’s and the Cath Kidston Tea Room among others.

A selection of pet-friendly dining options allows visitors to enjoy meals with their pets, and dedicated photo corners cater to pet enthusiasts.

Amenities at Central Westville

Central Westville blends indoor and outdoor spaces. Outdoor facilities encompass a jogging path for pet owners, urban farming plots, organic weekend markets, spaces for family activities and art exhibitions.

The mall provides pet-friendly amenities such as pet waste stations equipped with paper bags and plastic wrappers to maintain cleanliness. Pet strollers and rest areas with leash hooks are available.

Sustainable features

Central Pattana has incorporated green building standards in the mall as part of its sustainability strategy. It has reduced greenhouse emissions during construction and adopted environment-friendly business practices.

The mall is equipped with energy-efficient technology that saves energy. It also uses sustainable packaging made from bioplastics across its food establishments to reduce the amount of waste generated.

Contractors involved

The architectural design of Central Westville was undertaken by Thailand-based architecture firm Stu/D/O Architects.

Architecture and interior design company PHTAA Living Design was responsible for the interior design.

Civil and structural design works were performed by W And Associates, a consulting company.

Field Landscape, a landscape architecture and design studio, was in charge of the landscape design.

Major Development, a developer specialising in high-end and pet-friendly residences, collaborated with Central Pattana to provide pet-friendly facilities and amenities at the mall.
