Promenada Craiova shopping centre, also known as Promenada Mall Craiova, is a new shopping mall in Craiova, Romania.

It was developed by NEPI Rockcastle, an investor and developer of commercial properties in Central and Eastern Europe, with an estimated investment of €136m ($142.6m).

Opened in October 2023, the mall represents one of the major investments in Romania’s commercial retail sector since 2018.

The project created more than 1,500 direct and indirect jobs.

Location

The Promenada Craiova shopping centre is located in Calea Severinului in Craiova. Its development included the construction of a new boulevard to connect two important road arteries in Craiova, namely the Calea Severinului Boulevard and the Raului Boulevard.

In each direction of the new arteries, two lanes were developed, including a median line, smart traffic lights, roundabouts, green spaces and bike paths.

The mall is connected to the Calea Severinului Boulevard through a footbridge.

The mall’s location has a catchment of 242,000 people within a 15-minute drive and 340,000 people within a 30-minute drive.

Promenada Craiova shopping centre is developed on a 200,000m² (2.1 million ft²) site in Craiova.

The mall has a built-up area of 80,000m², which includes a shopping centre with a gross leasable area (GLA) of 53,300m² and a retail park with a GLA of 10,400m². It also includes a commercial area spanning 16,000m², which is owned by Dedeman, a hypermarket chain based in Romania.

At the time of opening, 99.9% of the shopping centre and 85% of the retail park were leased.

The mall houses more than 130 stores, of which more than 20 opened for the first time in Craiova or have innovative concepts.

The shopping centre has a parking lot with approximately 2,800 spaces. It also features Craiova’s largest outdoor panoramic terrace, featuring restaurants and cafes for dining and leisure.

Retail, dining and entertainment offerings at Promenada Craiova

The Promenada Craiova shopping centre features stores in three categories: fashion, leisure and technology.

The Lefties brand, which is part of the Inditex Group and is known for its affordable fashion in Spain, made its official debut in the Romanian market by opening its store at the mall. The Lefties digital store covers an area of 4,300m².

The mall features the first Carrefour hypermarket in Craiova, which is also the chain’s 45th store in Romania. The store offers more than 35,000 food and non-food products.

The clothing, footwear and jewellery brands featured in the shopping centre include Adidas, B&B Collection, Bershka, Bianco Nero, Buzz, Calvin Klein, CCC, Colin’s, Cropp, Enzo Bertini, Gryxx, Hermosa, iStyle, Miniso, Mohito, Nike, Peek & Cloppenburg, Pull&Bear, Splend’or, Stradivarius, Suwen, Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Tailor, Under Armour, US Polo,  Zara and many more.

Fast food options available at the mall include KFC, Burger King, Chopsticks, McDonald’s, Mesopotamia, Friday, Burger Dom, Cartography, Noodle Pac, Romanian Hearth, Vatra Romana Grill, Spartan, Mr. Corny and German Kebab.

Nudo&Crudo, Oster and Vatra Romana are the restaurants at the mall, while Filicori Zecchini, Jay Bubble Tea, Julius Mein and Tucano Coffee are the cafes.

The entertainment options available at the mall include a Cineplexx movie theatre, Game World and Energy Games Arcade.

Sustainability features

The Promenada Mall Craiova is installed with photovoltaic (PV) panels with a capacity of 6MWp over the parking area as part of NEPI Rockcastle’s commitment towards environmental, social and governance (ESG) norms and reducing the carbon footprint.

Developed with an estimated investment of more than €7m ($7.34m), it is the largest PV system for a shopping centre in Romania.

The PV system will meet between 25% and 30% of the shopping centre’s electricity consumption needs and is expected to commence operations in 2024.

Contractors involved

HB Design, an architecture firm based in Romania, was the architect for the project.

Bauelemente, a construction company based in Romania and part of the Baupartner group of companies, was the main contractor for the project.

Allied Engineers, a construction design company based in Romania, provided structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering services.

Project management company ONE Project & Cost Management provided project and cost management services.

Romaia-based security company Civitas is providing security services for the mall.
