Home furnishings retailer Ikea has started construction of a new store in Greenwich, south-east London, UK.

To be located at the Millennium Way Retail Park, the store is expected to be built at a cost of £100m.

Apart from the full IKEA product range, the planned store will have sustainable features, including upcycling solutions, solar panels, green walls, rainwater harvesting, in an attempt to ensure energy and resource-efficiency.

“Not only will Ikea Greenwich be our most sustainable store in the country, we are also very excited that the new store will demonstrate our commitment to a circular economy.”

It will also have connections to the district heating, sustainable drainage and on-site renewable technologies.

Ikea UK sustainability manager Hege Saebjornsen was quoted by media sources as saying: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Ikea. Not only will Ikea Greenwich be our most sustainable store in the country, we are also very excited that the new store will demonstrate our commitment to a circular economy.”

Customers can have access to 75 cycle spaces and 20 electric car-charging points at the store.

It is anticipated that around 500 new jobs would be offered at the store covering full and part-time positions across multiple roles, including customer relations, sales, interior design and food services.

To offer an improved shopping experience, the store will have a restaurant, a crèche, a rooftop pavilion and a biodiversity garden.

The retailer operates more than 20 stores in the UK, with total sales of £1.81bn recorded for the 2017 financial year.
