Dampened demand for second-hand children’s homewares because of hygiene concerns since the pandemic will give Home retailers the opportunity to win spend. According to a recent GlobalData survey, of consumers planning to purchase children’s furnishings over the next six months, the outbreak has put more than two-thirds off buying second hand (68.1%), while it has deterred almost three-quarters (71.8%) from borrowing from family or friends.

Home specialists with strong online propositions will benefit most from consumers’ shift away from second-hand purchases. Almost three-quarters (72.8%) of consumers who plan to purchase new children’s homewares over the next six months will shop online despite non-essential stores reopening, due to concerns about having to queue and other shoppers not adhering to social distancing rules. The research also suggests that local businesses will benefit (75.9% plan to buy from independent Home retailers).
