US nonprofit organisation and retail store operator Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (NYNJ) has opened its first Mini Shop and Donation Drop in Nassau County, Long Island, New York State.

Drop is a smaller format store than traditional Goodwill stores and donation centres. The store takes donations of clothes, handbags, shoes and household items, and offers a selection of pre-loved donated goods including home décor, books, glassware and knick-knacks.

The shop is the second in Long Island. The first is a traditional Goodwill store in Suffolk County. The organisation also offers online shopping.

In 2023, Goodwill NYNJ re-purposed more than 37m pounds of pre-loved clothing and home goods, reportedly diverting the weight of usable goods equivalent to 83 Statues of Liberty from landfills.

This was in addition to saving 55,000 metric tons of CO₂ from polluting the atmosphere – the equivalent of removing 12,000 cars from the road. 933,000 donors dropped off goods at Goodwill.

Goodwill is a nonprofit organisation which means that donors receive a tax receipt for their donations upon request.

Goodwill translates those donations into workforce development services for people with disabilities and the unemployed, and job training leading to employment.

Goodwill NYNJ president and CEO Katy Gaul-Stigge commented: “We are committed to playing a vital role in the community, and look forward to collaborating with elected officials, residential buildings, schools, and other organisations to help residents achieve their re-use goals.”
