Grocery technology company Instacart has partnered with multi-format food retailer Giant Eagle to launch a chain-wide same-day grocery delivery service in the US.

The service will deliver groceries in an hour from more than 200 grocery stores across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Maryland.

Using Instacart’s technologies, Giant Eagle will offer customers access to a selection of dairy, fresh baked goods, fresh produce, household goods, meat and prepared foods.

The service is now available on the Instacart App from more than 20 Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets across central Ohio and Carmel, Indiana, with plans to roll it out to all Giant Eagle and Market District locations in the future.

In addition to groceries, the partners plan to launch a delivery service for alcohol from participating Giant Eagle and Market District locations in the coming months.

Giant Eagle, which operates more than 200 supermarkets and 270 GetGo locations, will integrate its myPerks loyalty programme into the Instacart App.

Giant Eagle executive vice-president, chief information and supply chain officer Graham Watkins said: “Our partnership with Instacart makes ordering groceries from Giant Eagle more convenient than ever, whether customers choose to use our long-standing, company-led kerbside pickup and delivery service or Instacart’s popular platform.

“We always want to think like those we aim to serve, and we recognise that many shoppers have come to rely on Instacart for their grocery needs. This partnership ensures that customers across all our markets have access to our stores regardless of how they choose to shop with us.”

In a separate development, Instacart has introduced a new Instacart for Shopify app.

The app allows Shopify merchants to advertise their products through Instacart Ads.

Shopify Partnerships director Antonio Silva said: “By offering access to efficient and effective advertising solutions through Instacart’s integration with Shopify, our merchants gain valuable insights about sales data, advertising opportunities and performance across Instacart’s marketplace directly within their Shopify dashboard.”
