US-based retail company Kroger has opened a new spoke facility in Johnstown, expanding its delivery service to northern Colorado.

The facility is approximately 57,000ft² and will work in conjunction with the Aurora, Colorado fulfilment centre.

The new facility will offer Kroger’s vast selection of fresh items, including own-brand products and national brands.

The facility’s nearly 70 associates will assemble orders and place them on refrigerated delivery trucks for delivery in Johnstown.

Each Kroger Delivery van can hold up to 20 orders and may travel up to 90 minutes with orders from the hub and spoke facilities to make deliveries.

Johnstown Town manager Matt LeCerf said: “Kroger has developed a fulfilment facility that is unmatched in our community. This facility will meet the needs of both our community and the immediate surrounding area.

“The Kroger family and our partners at this facility have been amazing to work with and we are proud to welcome them to Johnstown. We are excited to watch them succeed.”

The expansion into Northern Colorado is part of a collaboration between Kroger and Ocado Group, which was announced in 2018.

The partnership’s delivery network combines artificial intelligence, advanced robotics and automation.

Kroger currently operates customer fulfilment centres in Monroe, Ohio; Groveland, Florida; Forest Park, Atlanta; and Dallas, Texas.

The company plans to add more customer fulfilment network facilities in the future.

Kroger Delivery fulfilment centres senior director Rebekah Manis said: “We look forward to connecting more customers in Northern Colorado to Kroger Delivery, which brings the freshest products, including Our Brands, directly to customers’ doors.

“Kroger Delivery enables us to meet our customers’ unique needs and deliver value, like exceptional friendly service from our best-in-class uniformed drivers and a personalised shopping experience with zero-compromise on convenience, value and selection.”

In May this year, Kroger opened a new 70,121ft² spoke facility in Austin, Texas.
