The Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre in Sydney, Australia, is being expanded with an estimated investment of $142m.

The expansion will double the size of the shopping centre and meet the anticipated growth in demand arising from new local residential and commercial developments.

Construction work on the project was started in January 2019 and is expected to be completed by late-2020. The project is expected to generate approximately 200 jobs during construction and more than 600 jobs after completion.

Sydney-based investment manager AMP Capital is managing the development activities on behalf of the owner UniSuper, an Australian superannuation fund company.

The expansion is AMP Capital’s second project announced after the Karrinyup Shopping Centre development.

Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre location

The shopping centre is located in the Inner West region of Sydney on Victoria Road in Marrickville, New South Wales.

The expansion project is located at 13-55 Edinburgh Road and will extend the shopping centre towards the south, between the Edinburgh and Smidmore Road.

“The project is expected to generate approximately 200 jobs during construction and more than 600 jobs after completion.”

A number of other projects are being developed within the area, which has been witnessing a 2.3% per year growth rate in the total trade area population since 2011. The population is projected to grow at 1.5% per year to reach 440,000 by 2021.

Marrickville Metro shopping centre expansion details

The Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre expansion will convert an unused industrial warehouse situated adjacent to the building. It will maintain the majority of the current warehouse facade, add two levels of retail to the shopping centre, and increase the size of the shopping centre from the existing 22,000m² to 33,000m².

The new development will host 44 new retail outlets, including leisure goods and services, and a fresh food precinct featuring al fresco and indoor dining facilities that will highlight the food and art culture of Sydney. The expanded shopping centre will host a new Coles supermarket, Woolworths, and Aldi outlets.

A pedestrian bridge will be developed across Smidmore Street to integrate the new development with the existing shopping centre. The bridge will be accessible from the existing Marrickville Metro car park. Further, a hidden laneway entrance designed especially for the residents living in the area will be developed.

The expansion project will add 455 new car parking spaces on two levels to the shopping centre, increasing the total spaces to 1,473.

Construction details

Construction work on the expansion project has been divided into two stages, with the first stage subdivided into stage 1A and stage 1B.

Stage 1A included refurbishment works on the existing Victoria Road public entrance to the centre. Stage 1B, which includes the expansion works, is currently ongoing.

Stage two of the project will focus on refurbishment works on the existing shopping centre.

The expansion and refurbishing works will be conducted with minimal disruption to the existing tenants.

ADCO Constructions has been awarded the contract to carry out construction works for the expansion project.
